The US Department of Homeland Security said police have arrested more than 20 people accused of smuggling thousands of illegal immigrants into the US. Among those arrested was Jaime Jaramillo Hernandez, 49, considered the ringleader of the network.

After more than two years of investigation, US authorities have arrested 400 related subjects, seized $187,000 in cash and issued more than 60 indictments.

Local judicial officials said that if convicted, these subjects could face up to 10 years in prison.

According to investigators, the ring operated mainly in the area from border cities in the West to San Antonio and Dallas in Texas.

The ring is accused of smuggling about 150 illegal immigrants from Central America and Mexico into the United States each week.

They transport immigrants in shabby, crowded, unsanitary trucks or small boats, for a fee of $5,000 per person.

Organizing illegal immigration into the United States brings in millions of dollars for this criminal organization.
