National Cup: SLNA to face Binh Duong in the quarter-finals

June 21, 2015 11:17

Except for HA.GL, all V-League representatives secured convincing victories within 90 minutes against First Division teams, thereby earning their tickets to the quarter-finals of the Kienlongbank National Cup 2015.

HA.GL was shocked.

Coach Guillaume Grachaen rested two of HA.GL's foreign players in their home match against CAND. Despite having players like Cong Phuong, Van Toan, Van Son, Thanh Tung, Dong Trieu… and many other key players from the V-League, the team from Pleiku failed to score a single goal against the First Division representative. In fact, if Coach Pham Minh Duc's players had been more accurate in their counter-attacks, they could have eliminated HA.GL from the National Cup.

After a 0-0 draw in regulation time, HA.GL had to rely on the excellent penalty save by goalkeeper Minh Nhựt, along with accurate kicks from Văn Sơn, Thanh Tùng, Trần Vũ, and Công Phượng, to overcome their opponent with a 4-2 victory and advance to the quarterfinals (CAND's missed penalty takers were Văn Toàn and Mạnh Dũng).

While HA.GL struggled, Thanh Hoa had no reason to celebrate their new sponsor's debut, suffering a 0-1 defeat against SHB.DN. Meanwhile, Hai Phong had a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Dong Thap.

V-LEAGUE TAKES THE LEAD

After the round of 16, the National Cup is completely devoid of representatives from the First Division, as all three remaining teams were defeated yesterday afternoon, with CAND having the most impressive performance. Meanwhile, Binh Phuoc suffered a crushing 0-5 away defeat against a much stronger team, DT.LA. Dak Lak, on the other hand, failed to create an upset, losing 0-3 to SLNA, even though the home team in Vinh did not field their strongest lineup.

With the home advantage, B.BD also secured their place in the quarterfinals by defeating QNK.QN 3-1, thanks to goals from Trong Hoang, Cong Vinh, and Tang Tuan. Another representative from the Southeast region, Dong Nai, also won with a similar score, defeating their fellow V-League team, XSKT.CT. In the 32nd minute, the visitors opened the scoring through Truong Cong Thao, but in the second half, coach Tran Binh Su's team scored three goals in quick succession through Henry, Duc Thang, and Huu Thang.

"The U23 team" still took to the field.

While many of their teammates rested after returning from the 28th SEA Games, Cong Phuong and Van Toan of HA.GL, along with Duy Manh of HN.T&T, still played. This is understandable because they are strategic players for their respective clubs. This also shows that the National Cup is very valuable to HA.GL and HN.T&T, not only in terms of achievement but also in terms of morale.
