A French company won first prize for the architectural design of the Deo Ca road tunnel.

On the afternoon of July 21st, the Ministry of Transport officially announced and awarded prizes for the design competition of the road tunnel through Deo Ca Pass.

The project commenced in late 2012 under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model with a total adjusted capital of VND 11,378 billion. Based on a reduction of over VND 4,000 billion compared to the initially approved total investment, Deo Ca Investment Joint Stock Company - the investor - proposed to the Ministry of Transport to allow the use of this reduced capital to invest in the construction of the Cu Mong tunnel.


To date, the Prime Minister has approved the investment in the construction of the Cu Mong tunnel, adding the Cu Mong tunnel to the Deo Ca tunnel project and assigning Deo Ca Investment Joint Stock Company to continue its implementation.

The investor has completed the feasibility study and the Ministry of Transport has approved the final report on the Cu Mong tunnel, allowing construction to begin in September 2015.

On November 2nd, 2014, the Co Ma tunnel project was completed. Regarding the Deo Ca tunnel, 3,200m out of 8,250m has been constructed, and construction is underway across the entire site. Phase 1 of the project, including the Co Ma tunnel and over 2km of southern access roads, is expected to be completed by September 2015.


To ensure the progress and quality of construction, the investor has directed the construction units to organize work in three shifts, regularly monitoring quality, labor safety, and environmental hygiene in accordance with the procedures currently applied to the project.

With the goal of making the Deo Ca Tunnel project a landmark, outstanding, environmentally friendly, and modern architectural work, Deo Ca Investment Joint Stock Company organized a design competition for the entire project to select the most suitable architectural solution.

After three months of launching the competition, the organizing committee received nine entries. On July 8th, the selection committee unanimously chose one first prize and three third prizes. The first prize was awarded to the architectural design by Atelier Dubosc et Associes (France), which stylized images of Vietnamese fishermen's lives into architectural forms for the main components of the project (toll station, traffic control center, tunnel entrance, rest stop).

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang highly appreciated the investor's coordination with relevant units to come up with the best solutions to ensure the technical and aesthetic quality of the project, as this is a very important project that ensures smooth traffic flow along the entire National Highway 1.

“Currently, the Ministry of Transport is implementing the construction of the Deo Ca and Phu Gia-Phuoc Tuong tunnels. Along with the construction of the Cu Mong tunnel and the second Hai Van tunnel, and the completion of the entire National Highway 1 route by 2015, this will help reduce travel time on National Highway 1 and ensure traffic safety,” Minister Dinh La Thang stated.

  • The Deo Ca Tunnel project is located between Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces. The starting point is at Km 1253+150 on National Highway 1A in Hoa Xuan Nam commune, Dong Hoa district, Phu Yen province. The end point of the project is at Km 1374+525 in Co Ma village, Van Tho commune, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province.

    The project has a total length of 13.1km, including the Deo Ca tunnel (4,125m), the Co Ma tunnel (500m), 6 bridges (1,200m), and access roads (8,330m). The entire route is designed to expressway standards with a speed of 80km/hour.

According to Vietnam+
