Regiment 27: Gratitude to Heroic Vietnamese Mothers and Martyrs' Families

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of July 20, the Liaison Committee of War Veterans of Regiment 27 in Nghe An organized a meeting to pay tribute to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and the families and relatives of martyrs of Regiment 27 "Heroic Trieu Hai Group".

Attending the program were comrades: Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Huy Hieu - Former Deputy Minister of National Defense, Major General Nguyen Huu Tuat - Deputy Commander of Military Region 4, along with representatives of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Provincial Veterans Association, the Association of Soldiers of the 1972 Citadel in Nghe An and Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, relatives of martyrs of Regiment 27 "Heroic Trieu Hai Group".

In February 1968, in response to urgent demands from the Southern battlefield, the General Staff instructed the Military Region 4 Command to establish the 27th Infantry Regiment to promptly support the battlefield.

The regiment, consisting of 3 battalions and 9 subordinate companies, was quickly established in the two provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh. During the period of fighting the Americans, the regiment participated in 4 major campaigns: Mau Than Campaign 1968, Southern Laos Campaign 1971, Quang Tri Liberation Campaign 1972, and the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign 1975.

From the day of its founding until the day of national reunification, more than 3,500 officers and soldiers of Regiment 27 sacrificed their lives; of which, there were about 950 officers and soldiers from Nghe An alone. Currently, 129 martyrs have been gathered at Ho Xa cemetery (Vinh Linh, Quang Tri); 66 martyrs have been brought back to their hometowns through the search of their brothers and comrades; 3 martyrs have been gathered at Cam Lo cemetery (Quang Tri); 7 martyrs have been gathered at Hai Lang, Hai Thuong, Hai Truong, Trieu Phong (Quang Tri). Due to the fierceness of the war, 45 martyrs could not be recovered, and currently there are about 700 martyrs from Nghe An whose whereabouts have not been found, it is unclear which cemetery or area on the battlefield they are resting in.

With the meaning of gratitude to the heroes who fell for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, the Liaison Committee of War Veterans of Regiment 27 organized a meeting and talked with 4 heroic Vietnamese Mothers of Regiment 27, namely Mother Le Thi Xan (Vinh City), Mother Nguyen Thi Thach (Anh Son), Mother Nguyen Thi Que (Do Luong), Mother Pham Thi Huong (Dien Chau) and many relatives and families of martyrs of Regiment 27 in Nghe An. At the same time, 180 gifts were given to the Mothers and relatives of martyrs, demonstrating the warm comradeship and the noble morality of "When drinking water, remember its source" of the Vietnamese people.

The program to meet and pay tribute to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and relatives of martyrs of Regiment 27 in Nghe An is a practical activity towards the 68th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2015).
