| Myanmar's arrest of 155 Chinese illegal loggers has strained relations between the two countries. |
An unnamed Home Ministry official said that among the prisoners granted amnesty this time were 155 Chinese nationals. These individuals were arrested last week for illegal logging and timber smuggling in northern Myanmar, near the border with China. However, the Myanmar authorities have not yet made an official announcement, only confirming that some Chinese prisoners will be released in this round.
Reportedly, the Myanmar authorities' sentencing and detention of 155 Chinese citizens has angered many Chinese people and further strained relations between the two countries. Following this, Beijing demanded that Myanmar provide a "reasonable" explanation for the incident.
