On September 1, the Guatemalan Congress decided to strip President Otto Perez Molina of his immunity, paving the way for an investigation into the leader for his involvement in a corruption ring through tax evasion activities along with Vice President Roxana Baldetti, who is currently in custody.
Thus, Mr. Otto Perez Molina could be arrested at any time, if this leader is accused of being involved in the above corruption case.
With 158 votes in favor, the Guatemalan Congress passed a resolution stripping President Otto Perez Molina of his immunity.
The decision came from the initiative of a special committee of five lawmakers, after the Central American country fell into a severe crisis due to many corruption cases that were exposed, including the participation of many high-ranking officials in the Guatemalan Government.
According to a report by the local Ministry of Public Works and the Office of the International Commission on Impunity in this country (CICIG), Mr. Otto Perez Molina and Ms. Roxana Beldetti led a "bribe collection" ring from companies importing tax-evading goods for many years, causing a loss of tens of millions of USD to the state budget.
Public opinion in Guatemala in general and the opposition in particular welcomed the above decision of the country's parliament and considered this an important victory for the people./.
