Researchers at the University of Vermont (USA) concluded that salt affects immune cells and becomes a factor causing multiple sclerosis after conducting experiments on mice. They fed a group of mice more salt than normal and compared them with other mice. The results showed that when absorbing too much salt, the mice showed symptoms of a disease similar to multiple sclerosis in humans.
“You need to eat enough salt for your body to function properly, but if you eat too much, things get out of control,” said Professor Gerald Weissmann, editor-in-chief of the scientific journal FASEB.
The study also showed that genes play a role in the development of MS. Some mice had more severe symptoms than others, suggesting that these individuals were more susceptible to salt due to their genetic makeup. Therefore, according to Professor Weissmann, it is necessary to calculate how much salt is enough for each person to reduce the risk of the disease.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that mainly occurs in young and middle-aged people, often leading to impaired motor function, sensory function and vision. If left untreated, the symptoms can be permanent and disabling. Currently, in the world, there are about 2.5 million people with multiple sclerosis.
