His winning image captured the horrific aftermath of the bombing of a mosque in Aleppo, Syria, with a young man holding his badly injured sister in his arms.

“At first I couldn’t see anything because of the smoke and dust, then everything became clearer and I saw this young man holding his sister and screaming for help. I wanted to capture the emotion on his face as he held his dying sister,” Halabi described.

Halabi studied computer science at Aleppo University and had no intention of becoming a war photojournalist.

However, when civil war broke out, Halabi took up a camera to document what was happening in his country.

Halabi taught himself photography and gained experience through contact with many foreign photojournalists working in Syria.

He also spent a lot of time studying photos published in major newspapers such as The New York Times and The Independent.

Halabi regularly uploads his photos to YouTube and they have caught the attention of AFP news agency.

The news agency not only bought Halabi's photos but also encouraged him to enter the contest.
