Malaysia arrests 2 suspects linked to Bangkok bombing

Malaysia yesterday informed its Thai counterparts that it had arrested two suspects in connection with the bombing in central Bangkok on August 17.

Lieutenant General Suchart Teerasawat, commander of a task force sent to Malaysia to request the country's cooperation in investigating and searching for the perpetrators of the Bangkok bombing, returned to Thailand yesterday, Bangkok Post quoted Thai police sources as saying. Mr. Suchart is currently in Yala province waiting for Malaysia to announce whether they agree to extradite the above suspects to Thailand.

Thai authorities have also contacted China for help in capturing Abudreheman Abudustaer, also known as Ishan, a suspect from the Xinjiang region who is believed to be the mastermind behind the bombing.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to the issue. The move was made after Bangladeshi police announced that suspect Ishan had left Bangladesh for China. According to Nazrul Islam, representative of the Bangladesh National Police, Ishan arrived in Dhaka on August 16 and traveled to China on August 30.
