For the first time in Vietnam, an 88-year-old patient with a large liver tumor underwent radiosurgery at the Oncology Center of Hue Central Hospital to have it completely removed using advanced techniques.

On the morning of November 2nd, the Oncology Center of Hue Central Hospital performed radiosurgery to treat a large liver tumor in a cancer patient using the Axesse Elekta linear accelerator radiotherapy system.

The patient, Mrs. LTM (88 years old, residing in Phu Vang District, Thua Thien-Hue Province), was admitted to the hospital more than a month ago and was found to have a fairly large malignant tumor (approximately 8 x 6.7 x 6.5 cm) in her liver.

This is the first radiosurgery treatment case for a patient with a liver tumor in Vietnam.

Associate Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital, said that the patient was elderly, the tumor was too large, and it was located in a position where other treatment methods such as surgery, radiofrequency ablation, or chemoembolization could not be performed. After consulting with experts from the Maria Curie Institute (France), the hospital decided to use radiosurgery with the Axesse Elekta linear accelerator system to eliminate the tumor.

The radiosurgery was also supported by Dr. Christine Fisher of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, part of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's overseas charitable organization.

According to Associate Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, radiosurgery for tumors in the body is difficult and complex because the large amplitude of breathing causes the tumor to constantly move. However, this new generation Axesse Elekta linear accelerator radiotherapy system has two features: body fixation (keeping the tumor's movement amplitude during breathing at the lowest possible level) and software that automatically targets the tumor precisely according to breathing patterns. These modern techniques have enabled precise radiosurgery for tumors in the body.

"Successful radiosurgery for tumors in the liver, pancreas, and other organs will open up opportunities to extend lifespan and improve the quality of life for cancer patients who cannot undergo other treatments," said Associate Professor Pham Nhu Hiep.
