(Baonghean.vn) - Nghe An Friendship General Hospital recently performed emergency surgery, saving the life of patient Nguyen Thanh Ha (83 years old, Dien Chau) who suffered from a rare cecal perforation in an elderly and frail condition.

Patient Ha was admitted to the hospital in the early morning of November 3rd with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, signs of septic shock, and weakened health due to old age.

The surgical team is performing emergency surgery on the patient.

After initial examination and consultation, the doctors in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery diagnosed patient Ha with toxic peritonitis due to perforation of a hollow organ. The patient's prognosis was very serious, requiring urgent surgery, as the patient's condition was worsening, leading to irreversible shock and death.

The doctors quickly performed emergency surgery, cleaning the abdominal cavity, removing the appendix, and simultaneously cutting the edges around the perforation for pathological examination. They then created a colostomy through the abdominal wall to create the perforated cecal base for the patient.

With the coordination of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department and the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department, the surgery was performed urgently, accurately, and quickly, saving patient Ha's life.

According to Master's degree holder Dinh Van Chien, from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and the lead surgeon in the operation: Typically, this condition occurs due to causes such as necrotizing diverticulitis, tuberculosis, amoebiasis, cancer, or foreign objects in the digestive tract such as fish bones or toothpicks…

However, this is a rare case; patient Ha did not have any foreign objects, so the medical team needed the results of the pathology test to determine the cause of the illness.

Currently, the patient is receiving treatment and post-operative care from doctors in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
