Seven people were killed in a tornado triggered by the storm in southern Guangdong province, and another seven were killed in a landslide. Three fishermen died in a boating accident at sea, and another body was found in the rubble of a house that collapsed during the storm. Four fishermen are still missing.
The typhoon made landfall in Guangdong province on October 4, causing heavy rain and widespread power outages, Chinese media reported. The storm’s winds also severely damaged power grids along the coast, forcing China to cancel dozens of flights and suspend high-speed rail services.
Guangdong provincial government said the locality suffered losses of up to 23.24 billion yuan, affecting the lives of 3.5 million people and damaging about 282,700 hectares of cropland.
Xinhua also said nearly 1.9 million people in Guangxi suffered damage from the storm, 417 houses were destroyed and one person was killed by a falling tree.
