However, Thai officials said the King would not appear in public on his birthday due to health reasons. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn is expected to perform the birthday celebrations in his father's place, including a candlelight vigil in honor of the King in the evening in Bangkok.
Recently, the King has been hospitalized for several illnesses and recently underwent gallbladder surgery. The Thai people are extremely concerned about the health of their revered monarch.
"I have always had deep affection for the King and wish him good health… Thailand's National Day is also the King's birthday. He is like a father to us," said Suchada Charan, a resident of Bangkok.
The celebration took place at a time when police were expanding their investigation into the actions of a group accused of insulting the monarchy. Since coming to power in May 2014, the Thai military government has severely punished those who insult the monarchy, imposing a maximum prison sentence of 60 years for this offense.
