There are currently 6 types of JAPONICA rice, including: TBJ1, TBJ2, JO1, JO2, DS1 and QJ4. In Que Phong district, JAPONICA rice has been experimentally grown in Tri Le commune since 2010. This cold-resistant rice variety is suitable for the climate of the border commune, has good resistance to planthoppers and pests, and produces high yielding, delicious, rich rice.
After a successful experiment in the Tri Le highlands, Que Phong district expanded production in Muong Noc commune. The results showed that JAPONICA rice is suitable for the cold climate of the border area, grows well with the climate and soil of the central district, with an average rice yield of 54-55 quintals/ha. Que Phong district has directed the construction of a commercial rice field of Muong Noc fragrant rice and this type of rice is currently sold on the market at 25,000 VND/kg.
With the outstanding characteristics of JAPONICA rice variety and after 5 years of experimentation in Que Phong, the Institute of Agricultural Genetics, the Department of Science and Technology and Que Phong district have agreed to put the JO1 and JO2 varieties into mass production, with 300 hectares planted in the 2015-2016 winter-spring crop alone.
