Bankrupt because of flowers

"Currently, many households have cut all the flowers to sell, so it is normal for the price of flowers to increase to 1 million VND/bunch/10 branches during Tet. This Tet, I'm afraid there won't be any flowers to sell," Tay Tuu flower growers are worried because the lilies bloom early, missing Tet.

Many traders squeeze prices, making lilies even cheaper.

These days, lily growers in the two flower villages of Tay Tuu (Bac Tu Liem) and Ha Mo village (Dan Phuong) all go to the fields to cut flowers to sell urgently.

To save the situation, many households have to cut lilies, refrigerate them and save them to sell on the 15th day of the twelfth lunar month.

There are still more than 20 days until Tet, but the lily fields have begun to bloom. While cutting the flowers, Mr. Thuy lamented: "This year, many flower growers have gone bankrupt because of flowers. When I bought the roots to plant, it was 21,000 VND/plant. Now, I sell it for less than 15,000 VND/branch."

The prolonged warm weather causes flowers to bloom early, even though Tet is still a few weeks away, so many households have to cut flowers and dump them on traders.

As one of the households renting land to grow the most lilies in Trung Tuu, Mr. Thang's garden is on the list of households suffering heavy losses here. With more than 3 hectares of lilies, Mr. Thang is having to mobilize labor to cut flowers to sell 15-20 days earlier than expected. The cost of buying seeds is up to 20,000/plant, the cost of fertilizer, pesticides, roofing, care... the total investment is up to about 2 billion VND, now having to cut and sell in the middle of more than 50% of the early blooming lily area at a price of 5,000 to 7,000 VND/branch, his family has lost about 1 billion VND.

The price of each lily branch has decreased by 6-7 times compared to last year. For lily branches with 3 or 4 ears, the price is only from 50 to 80 thousand VND/bunch of 10 branches for yellow lilies. The price of red lilies ranges from 15 to 18 thousand VND/branch with 5 ears; 20 thousand VND/branch with 7 ears. Red lilies are sold at a higher price because the original price is higher, and the care is also more expensive than yellow lilies.

Explaining why lily prices are so low, garden owners here say that this year's weather is erratic, with warm sunshine all the time, so there is no winter. It takes about 100-120 days to grow lilies for harvest, but with this weather, the lilies bloom 20 days earlier.

Not to mention that this is not yet the shopping season for everyone, so the flower prices are even lower. The customers who come to buy are mainly small traders and flower shop owners. Taking advantage of the situation, they bargain and push down the price, making the flower prices unstable and changing every day.

Ms. Hoai Thuong, a customer who came to buy flowers at Mr. Thuy's garden, said: "I surveyed the flower prices of many garden owners here, each has a different price. I order flowers from any garden with a low price, and import them from now until Tet. Customers like to choose lily branches with many ears, it symbolizes reunion and prosperity."

At this rate, by the time of Lunar New Year 2016, lilies will be scarce in the Tet flower market and flower prices will certainly be high. Ms. Thu - the owner of the flower garden optimistically said, "Currently, many households have cut all the flowers to sell, so by Tet the price of flowers will increase to 1 million/bunch/10 branches, which is normal. This Tet, I'm afraid there won't be any flowers to sell."
