(Baonghean) - Gradually closing the area, diversifying crops, forming specialized commodity growing areas... That is the important orientation of Que Phong district when determining to increase economic value with winter crops.

Close the area

Everyone in Muong village (Chau Kim, Que Phong) is happy for Ms. Vi Thi Luong's family, because after 3 years of growing safe vegetables, they have not only escaped poverty but also built a spacious, well-furnished 3-room house. Escaping poverty through vegetables is no longer strange to many localities in the province when they have advantages in land and irrigation. However, in the mountainous commune of Chau Kim, most of the land is hilly and sloping. Therefore, for many years, winter crop cultivation has stopped at 30 hectares in the alluvial land along streams and rivers.

In recent years, people have boldly expanded and reclaimed hilly areas or low-efficiency forestry land, converting to vegetable growing. After tireless efforts, up to now, the hilly areas of Muong, Mong, Choi villages... have been covered with a lush green vegetable color with a total area of up to 35 hectares, bringing the total winter crop area of the whole commune to 65 hectares.

Ms. Vi Thi Luong shared: “Previously, my family lived mainly on upland rice, but because we could only grow one crop per year and the productivity was not high, we remained poor. Since the commune had a training program on growing clean vegetables and had accompanying support policies, my family boldly converted 7 sao of garden land to grow vegetables, at the end of the season, we earned more than 40 million VND, with expenses of less than 8 million VND."

For 3 years, Ms. Luong's family has been attached to vegetables, selling vegetables for food and growing vegetable seeds. Selling them is not too difficult, because safe vegetables are very popular now, traders come to the garden to buy and bring them to the lowlands to sell. "Thanks to that, the family has gradually stabilized their lives and this year officially got off the list of poor households" - Ms. Luong added.

Previously, many hilly areas of Chau Kim used to grow acacia, however, acacia trees take more than 7 years to grow before being harvested. When converted to vegetables, the economic efficiency is many times higher. Affirming this, Mr. Ha Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee said: "Up to now, Chau Kim has not grown any crops as effectively as vegetables, thanks to it, the commune has begun to change. People here are also quick to approach and implement the process of growing vegetables for sale."

Cabbage is a very valuable commodity in Chau Kim. During the harvest season, traders come to buy directly from the garden, the price is 10,000 VND/head regardless of size. On average, each head weighs approximately 1 kg. As for cabbage, each 3-tael bag costs from 10 to 12,000 VND. During Tet, the price is higher, so people often plant 1 to 2 weeks later to harvest at the most profitable time. "At the end of the season, some households earn nearly 40 million VND, so people are very excited to invest in growing winter vegetables," added Mr. Ha Minh Tuan.

Crop diversification.

Coming to Hai Lam Cooperative, Que Son commune while people were taking care of nearly 5 hectares of winter vegetables, Mr. Le Van Noi, Chairman of the Cooperative said: "If successful, growing winter vegetables alone will bring in an income of 6 - 8 million VND in about 1 month. However, it is necessary to diversify the types of vegetables for easy consumption. If we see that cabbage is easy to sell and rush to grow it, it may not sell well."

Hai Lam Cooperative, established nearly 4 years ago, has created a connection with 20 households in the area to produce vegetables. Here, households have been trained in clean vegetable growing techniques, creating a connection in the allocation of growing areas, types of crops and ensuring a stable source of seeds for neighboring localities.

Currently, the total vegetable growing area of Que Son commune is nearly 40 hectares. If commercial vegetables are effective, the commune can increase the area from 70 to 80 hectares.

This winter crop, Que Phong district has encouraged people to grow a variety of economically efficient crops such as cabbage, kohlrabi, onions, garlic, beans, squash, etc. The district has also established a steering committee for autumn-winter crop production, and technical teams to direct the grassroots in communes with large and concentrated areas. Train and guide farmers on new technical advances in production, and replicate successful winter crop planting models in previous years. The district strives to plant 460 hectares of winter crop, of which corn accounts for 200 hectares, vegetables 220 hectares, beans 20 hectares and peanuts 20 hectares.

To create a “leverage” for the development of the winter crop, the district has a mechanism to support 100% of vegetable seeds for communes to build a model of concentrated vegetable cultivation; support the construction of a model of corn cultivation on sloping land in 4 communes of Dong Van, Thong Thu, Tien Phong and Hanh Dich. Hopefully, with the active direction of authorities at all levels and the efforts of farmers, the winter crop in Que Phong will open up a major direction in economic development, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction for local people.
