This is the latest attack causing heavy casualties targeting Thailand's long-standing and volatile region.

The explosion occurred on the night of November 12 in Khok Pho district of Pattani, one of three provinces with a majority Muslim population and where rebel forces are currently fighting for greater autonomy.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Tanongsak Wansupha, commander of the Pattani police station, confirmed that insurgents had planted the bomb, although, like most attacks in the area, no one has yet claimed responsibility.

Mr. Tanongsak stated, "The perpetrator placed a bomb under a chair at the checkpoint, killing four people."

Since 2004, more than 6,500 people have died as a result of occasional outbreaks of violence in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, Thailand's border provinces.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country, but in the south, Muslims are the majority, and their conflict with Buddhists has existed for decades.

Following the 2014 coup, the current military government in power in Thailand promised to bring peace to the southern region of the country within a year.
