Asked by reporters what could restore relations between the two countries, Saudi Arabia's UN Ambassador Abdallah al-Mouallimi said: "It's very simple. Iran must stop and stop interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, including our country. If they do that, of course we will normalize relations with Iran. We are not natural enemies of Iran."

The statement was made in the context of Saudi Arabia cutting all ties with Iran on January 3 after Riyadh executed Shi'ite Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr and 46 others, a move that led to attacks on Saudi Arabia's diplomatic facilities in Tehran.

Meanwhile, on January 5, Japan urged Middle Eastern countries to ease regional tensions through dialogue following diplomatic tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
