Tuy là xe bọc thép chở quân chuyên sử dụng trên chiến trường, nhưng trong thời bình BTR-60PB hoàn toàn có thể đáp ứng nhiệm vụ chống khủng bố, chống bạo loạn, hoạt động tốt trong môi trường đô thị (nhờ dùng bánh lốp).
Although it is an armored personnel carrier used exclusively on the battlefield, in peacetime the BTR-60PB can fully fulfill anti-terrorism and anti-riot missions, and operates well in urban environments (thanks to its use of tires).
Xe bọc thép chở quân BTR-60PB do ông V.A. Dedkov thiết kế, được nhà máy Gorkovsky sản xuất từ năm 1966. Đây là biến thể rất phổ biến của dòng xe thiết giáp huyền thoại BTR-60 được thiết kế từ năm 1955. Có hơn 26.000 chiếc BTR-60 được sản xuất ở Liên Xô và Romania, xuất khẩu tới hàng chục quốc gia (gồm cả Việt Nam – được Liên Xô viện trợ từ năm 1973). Hiện nay, xe thiết giáp BTR-60 được biên chế cho các đơn vị tăng – thiết giáp lục quân và hải quân Việt Nam.
The BTR-60PB armored personnel carrier was designed by Mr. VA Dedkov and produced by the Gorkovsky plant since 1966. This is a very popular variant of the legendary BTR-60 armored vehicle designed since 1955. More than 26,000 BTR-60s were produced in the Soviet Union and Romania, exported to dozens of countries (including Vietnam - which received aid from the Soviet Union since 1973). Currently, the BTR-60 armored vehicle is assigned to the tank and armored units of the Vietnamese army and navy.
BTR-60PB nặng từ 10,2-10,3 tấn, dài 7,22m, rộng 2,83m, cao 2,42m, bọc lớp giáp thép mỏng chỉ chống được đạn cỡ 7,62mm (bắn cách 100m hoặc xa hơn) và mảnh đạn pháo. Nhìn chung, nhiệm vụ của BTR-60PB là chở quân trên chiến trường, không phải là chiến đấu trực tiếp, nên khó đòi hỏi cao về hỏa lực, giáp. Xe được trang bị 4 cặp bánh lốp cùng động cơ xăng GAZ-49B cho tốc độ trên đường băng tới 80km/h.
The BTR-60PB weighs 10.2-10.3 tons, is 7.22m long, 2.83m wide, 2.42m high, and is covered with thin steel armor that can only withstand 7.62mm bullets (fired at a distance of 100m or more) and artillery shell fragments. In general, the mission of the BTR-60PB is to transport troops on the battlefield, not to engage in direct combat, so it is difficult to demand high firepower and armor. The vehicle is equipped with 4 pairs of tires and a GAZ-49B gasoline engine for a runway speed of up to 80km/h.
Ngoài khả năng cơ động tốt trên bộ, BTR-60PB còn được biết tới khả năng bơi lội tuyệt vời nhờ hệ thống chân vịt đặt ở đuôi xe. Nó cho phép xe di chuyển trên sông ngòi, hồ, biển với tốc độ 10km/h.
In addition to its good mobility on land, the BTR-60PB is also known for its excellent swimming ability thanks to the propeller system located at the rear of the vehicle. It allows the vehicle to move on rivers, lakes, and seas at a speed of 10km/h.

Tháp pháo trên nóc xe trang bị đại liên 14,5mm (xuyên giáp dày 32mm cách 500m) cùng súng máy đồng trục 7,62mm để chi viện hỏa lực cho các chiến sĩ khi cần.
The turret on the roof of the vehicle is equipped with a 14.5mm heavy machine gun (piercing 32mm thick armor at 500m) and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun to provide fire support to soldiers when needed.
