The report also expressed concern about terrorist attacks, stating that the threat from Islamist terrorist groups against the UK, including British citizens and British interests abroad, is increasing.
The report said the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) will spend £178 billion over the next decade on weapons and equipment, an increase of £12 billion compared to previous estimates.
New equipment and weapons will be provided to special forces such as the Special Air Service (SAS) and the Special Naval Service (SBS); Establish and put into operation two rapid reaction brigades by 2025 based on current armed units (each brigade has a strength of 5,000); Increase the number of unmanned reconnaissance aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 10 to 20; Extend the service life of Typhoon fighter jets by 10 years to 2040, meaning there will be a total of seven forward-deployed squadrons with each squadron consisting of 12 aircraft.
In addition, the newly released report said that Britain will invest in new unmanned surveillance aircraft and accelerate the purchase of fifth-generation multi-role fighter jets F-35 Lightning II produced by the US company Lockheed Martin. The MOD is expected to buy 28 more F-35s for two new aircraft carriers, each worth about 100 million pounds.
According to the plan, 24 of the total 138 F-35s ordered will arrive in the UK before 2023. The UK will also spend 31 billion pounds to replace current nuclear submarines.
In a newly released report, the UK asserted that the threat from Islamic terrorist groups targeting the UK, including British citizens and British interests abroad, is increasing. To cope, the UK will recruit 1,900 more intelligence and security personnel, and increase the anti-terrorism budget by 30% in the coming years. Since 2010, more than 60 British citizens have died in terrorist attacks abroad, including two recent attacks in Sousse (Tunisia) and Paris./.
