According to Reuters, on December 10, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan declared that the issue of withdrawing his country's troops from Iraq was not worth mentioning, after Baghdad accused Ankara of deploying troops to Iraq without the host country's approval.

At a press conference, President Erdogan affirmed that Turkish soldiers were in Iraq to train Kurdish forces, not for combat purposes.

According to this leader, Türkiye, the US and the Kurdish government in northern Iraq will hold a three-party meeting on December 21.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Baghdad is urging the United Nations to condemn Türkiye's move to deploy troops and tanks to Iraq.

Previously, Baghdad gave Ankara a 48-hour deadline to withdraw its forces, but this deadline expired earlier this week without any action from Turkey.

In a related development, US Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin said that Washington wants Ankara to do more to stop the flow of money and militants from Syria and Iraq into Türkiye across the border.

“Securing that border would bring huge benefits,” Mr. Szubin stressed./.
