According to traditional medicine practitioner Pham Trong Son (Ben Cat, Binh Duong), among the methods of treating kidney failure using traditional medicine, the Eight-Ingredient formula of Hai Thuong Lan Ong is recognized as highly effective.

"Kidney failure is a difficult disease to treat, but it's not incurable," affirmed traditional medicine practitioner Son.

The Eight-Ingredient Formula consists of: Rehmannia glutinosa (20g), Dioscorea opposita (10g), Poria cocos (10g), Cornus officinalis (4g), Paeonia lactiflora (4g), Alisma orientalis (4g), Aconitum carmichaelii (3g), and Cinnamomum cassia (3g). Additionally, the formula includes Achyranthes bidentata (4g), Plantago major (4g), Ophiopogon japonicus (4g), and Schisandra chinensis (honey-soaked) (20 seeds).

According to herbalist Sơn, Rehmannia glutinosa has a cooling nature, nourishes kidney yin, replenishes blood, and lowers blood pressure. Aconitum and cinnamon bark have a warming nature, nourish kidney yang, and increase blood pressure. Achyranthes root and Plantago seed are diuretics. Other ingredients support and enhance the effects of the medicine.

The Eight-Ingredient Formula has the effect of nourishing kidney yin and yang, promoting diuresis, increasing the excretion of toxins from the body, and restoring kidney function. With the above dosage, the formula leans more towards nourishing yang than yin, therefore patients need to be carefully advised by a physician.

It is necessary to understand how to properly adjust the dosage according to the body's condition. If kidney yin is deficient, increase rehmannia glutinosa and omit cinnamon. If kidney yang is deficient, reduce rehmannia glutinosa.

A healthy body requires a balance of yin and yang. Kidney yin deficiency causes anemia, high blood pressure, and a feeling of heat in the body. Kidney yang deficiency causes weakness, coldness in the body, and low blood pressure.

With the Eight-Ingredient Formula, the dosages of three ingredients—aconite, cinnamon, and rehmannia—must be extremely precise; any deviation can be dangerous.
