Kyodo quoted the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) as saying that on the afternoon of December 20, two ships of the China Coast Guard (CCG) entered the waters around the disputed Senkaku Islands (called Diaoyu by Beijing) in the East China Sea. This is the first intrusion since December 11 and the 34th this year.

Two Chinese ships, identified as Coast Guard 2307 and Coast Guard 2308, entered the waters in the early afternoon and moved in the area for about 1 hour and 40 minutes, before leaving the contiguous zone.

According to the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, while moving around the Senkaku Islands, a Chinese ship responded to Japan's warning by asking the Japanese patrol ship to leave "Chinese territorial waters"./.
