Local police said the revenge group of about 20 people attacked six Pakistanis last night, injuring two.

German police said two Pakistanis and a Syrian were injured in an attack yesterday (January 10) in the western city of Cologne.

Local media reported that the attackers had gathered together via Facebook to call for a “hunt” against foreigners in retaliation for a series of attacks and harassment of women allegedly carried out by a group of immigrant origin in Cologne on New Year’s Eve.

Local police said a revenge group of about 20 people attacked six Pakistanis last night, injuring two. In another incident just minutes later, a group of five locals attacked and injured a Syrian man.

Also yesterday, security forces increased operations in the area between the central station and the city's famous Gothic cathedral after receiving information that some extremist groups were trying to incite revenge against immigrants.

Meanwhile, an anti-Islam political movement called Pagida is expected to hold a rally in the eastern German city of Leipzig tonight.

The German government has been under pressure in recent days after a series of attacks and harassment of women on New Year's Eve in Cologne, allegedly by refugees and migrants from North Africa. This harassment has caused a great shock to Germany and focused attention on the approximately 1.1 million migrants who arrived in Germany last year.

Today, a committee of the regional parliament of North-Rhine Westphalia, where Cologne is the largest city, will question police and relevant authorities about the New Year's Eve attack there.
