Mr Kerry is on a two-day visit to Beijing aimed at reining in North Korea's nuclear programme after the country announced it had successfully tested an H-bomb on January 6.

Although the US-China relationship has progressed from climate change to counterterrorism cooperation, “there are some important issues that the two countries need to find common ground on in the coming time…

One of them is North Korea's nuclear program - a major challenge to global security, and also the most important issue for America's security," US Secretary of State Kerry said during talks with his Chinese counterpart.

Mr. Kerry also emphasized that the US and China need to find ways to make progress “on concerns and activities in the East Sea.” Tensions in the East Sea have escalated seriously due to China’s illegal construction of artificial islands.

Previously, the US Secretary of State also visited Laos and Cambodia and called on these two countries and ASEAN to express a common stance against China's provocative actions in the East Sea, before the US-ASEAN leaders summit in California next month.
