8 people suffocated to death in a lime kiln on New Year's Day

On New Year's Day, a group of workers working in a lime kiln in Nong Cong district (Thanh Hoa) were suffocated by gas, killing eight people.

At 8:00 p.m. on January 1, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police were examining the scene and performing an autopsy to investigate an accident that occurred at a private lime kiln in Hoang Giang Commune, Nong Cong District.

According to VnExpress sources, 8 victims have died, another person is in critical condition and is currently being treated at Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital.

Earlier, at around 4:30 p.m. the same day, a group of workers working at a lime kiln owned by a man named Le Van Thong in Yen Bai village (Hoang Giang commune, Nong Cong district) were hit by toxic gas. “Many people collapsed, fainted, and stopped breathing. They were rushed to the hospital, but eight people died, including Mr. Thong, his daughter-in-law, and his daughter,” a witness told VnExpress.

An official from the Nong Cong District Party Committee said that according to the initial assessment of the authorities, it is very likely that the victims died from coal gas suffocation, but the investigation agency has not yet reached an official conclusion. Chairman of the Nong Cong District People's Committee Tran Van Thuan said that the authorities are urgently investigating the incident.
