According to the source, 14 F-22s arrived at the base on January 20, 21 and 22. Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said the Japanese government was not informed in advance about this move.

When asked for an explanation by the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the US side replied that the US Air Force will temporarily deploy a total of 26 F-22 and F-16 aircraft at Yokota base from January 20-22.

Minister Nakatani said the deployment was part of “normal security cooperation between Japan and the United States,” noting: “North Korea’s nuclear test has clearly shown that the security environment surrounding our country is becoming increasingly severe. Therefore, the deterrence capability provided by the US military based on the Japan-US alliance is indispensable for Japan’s security.”
