The female pilots landed in Saudi Arabia, a conservative country that does not allow women to drive. Talal Alharbi, a journalist there, said women can only drive to take their children to school or if a family member needs to go to the hospital.
“Women must accept these basic things,” the journalist wrote in Arab News. “Following these rules is the smart thing to do. Being stubborn will not help them at this time.” On Facebook, a page called “Saudi Women Can Drive” has received more than 35,000 likes.
In 2012, Sharifah Czarena made history as the first female captain in South Asia.
“Pilots, everyone thinks it’s normal if it’s a man’s job. As a woman, as a Bruneian woman, I really see this as a huge achievement. It really shows the younger generation, especially the girls, that whatever your dream is, you can achieve it,” the female captain told The Brunei Times.
According to The Metro, Royal Brunei Airlines said it has been proactively creating development opportunities for female pilots./.
