American media surprised as Vietnamese film surpasses "Star Wars" in box office revenue.

Despite breaking box office records worldwide, the blockbuster "Star Wars" only ranked second in Vietnam in terms of revenue, behind "Em là bà nội của anh" (You Are My Grandmother).

This past weekend, the seventh installment of the legendary "Star Wars" series, titled "The Force Awakens," opened with a massive $517 million worldwide, dominating the box office in North America, the UK, Australia, Russia, and other markets. However, surprisingly, this Hollywood blockbuster ranked only second in two Asian markets: South Korea and Vietnam.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in Vietnam, the film that surpassed "Star Wars" in box office revenue was "Em là bà nội của anh" (You Are My Grandma), a remake of the South Korean film "Miss Granny". Although Disney did not release official box office figures for "Star Wars" in Vietnam, they acknowledged that this blockbuster was not the highest-grossing film there last weekend.

Despite being released for over a week, "You Are My Grandma" still holds the number one spot at the Vietnamese box office, with viewership and revenue in its second week even higher than its opening week, despite a 30% reduction in screenings to make way for new releases. After 10 days in theaters, the romantic comedy "You Are My Grandma" has grossed 41.5 billion VND. The film features a cast of young and attractive Vietnamese actors including Miu Le, Hua Vy Van, Ngo Kien Huy, and others.

At the South Korean box office, “Star Wars” was the second highest-grossing film after “The Himalayas”. Director Lee Seok-hoon's film grossed $8.7 million over its four-day weekend, while “Star Wars” earned $7.9 million during the same period.
