Eating chocolate will make you smarter

Researchers say that people who eat chocolate at least once a week will see significant improvements in memory and thinking.

Chocolate is good for your heart, reduces your risk of stroke, and even protects your skin from the sun. Now, there's another benefit that makes it hard to avoid its sweet taste: it makes you smarter.

A recent study published in the journal Appetite confirms this. "The impact is significant, affecting a number of cognitive domains," said psychologist Merrill Elias, one of the study's authors.

Elias began studying the cognitive abilities of more than 1,000 people in New York in the 1970s, initially looking at the relationship between blood pressure and brain activity. About 15 years ago, he decided to ask people to participate in a longitudinal study of what they were eating.

Leading nutrition analyst at the University of South Australia, Ms Crichton also acknowledged that the new study on the benefits of chocolate was a unique opportunity to determine its impact on the brain.

Evaluating the cognition of people who ate chocolate less than once a week compared to those who ate it at least once a week, researchers found that consuming more of this food resulted in better brain function.

The benefits, as Ms Crichton describes them, are that you'll be better at everyday tasks like "remembering phone numbers, shopping lists, or being able to do two things at once like having a conversation and driving".

Previous studies have shown that foods containing flavanols, such as chocolate, significantly improve brain function. In 2009, researchers found that mental arithmetic became easier after volunteers were given a high dose of flavanols by drinking hot cocoa.

In 2014, another study also showed that a diet rich in cocoa can help prevent memory loss in the elderly.

Of course, researchers also recommend that people do not consume too much chocolate each week./.
