(Baonghean.vn) - The area of ​​sweet potatoes in Nghe An province currently reaches 3,490.3 hectares planted in many districts such as Yen Thanh, Nghi Loc, Tan Ky, Nam Dan, Dien Chau... High-yield and quality varieties such as K4, Red Japanese, Yellow Japanese... are currently selling well. 1 hectare of sweet potatoes reaches about 360 - 400 million VND/crop in about 3 months.

Red sweet potatoes are planted in the winter-spring crop starting from the 10th lunar month and harvested in the 2nd lunar month. In Tien Thanh commune (Yen Thanh), people used to cultivate 2 rice crops/year, but since the experimental planting of red sweet potatoes on 2-rice land showed high economic efficiency, people decided to switch to growing sweet potatoes in the winter-spring crop.

Currently, the whole Tien Thanh commune has 45 hectares of red sweet potato growing area, with a yield of 50-60 tons/ha. To put red sweet potato into the list of key crops in the winter-spring crop. With a selling price of 6-7 thousand VND/kg in the field, one sao of sweet potato after deducting income is 3 million VND in profit. If people sell retail, they can get 9,000-10,000 VND/kg, the profit is about 4 million VND/sao, 3 times higher than growing rice (growing rice for one crop is nearly 1 million VND/sao).

The entire Yen Thanh district currently grows over 100 hectares of sweet potatoes. The red sweet potato variety currently grown by people is mainly KLC266, which was obtained from the North Central Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, sweet potato output in Nghe An is estimated at 16,385.7 tons in 2015; productivity is 65.8 tons/ha.
