Drinking fruit juice in plastic or stainless steel bottles – cancer one day!

Recently, information about Chinese stainless steel thermos bottles containing carcinogens is being widely used in the Vietnamese market. Professor Nguyen Hai Nam, University of Pharmacy, said that not only thermos bottles, but also all stainless steel and plastic utensils should not be used to store acidic liquids for a long time, as this can cause cancer in users.

Previously, the Chinese government has just issued a warning to consumers about Chinese thermos bottles containing carcinogens. This is the result of an experiment conducted by the Institute of Quality Control and Research in Jiangsu Province, China in collaboration with other units in the same field at the end of February.

Accordingly, in the experiment, experts stored purified water and fruit juice in two thermos bottles of the same type. After a period of time, the heavy metal content in the fruit juice increased dramatically and exceeded the allowable limit. Analysis of the purified water sample did not show any similar phenomenon.

Stainless steel products have many types.

Talking with Associate Professor Nguyen Duy Thinh, Institute of Biotechnology and Food, Hanoi University of Science and Technology about the issue of stainless steel thermos bottles containing carcinogens, Associate Professor Thinh said that people should not be too panicked by this information.

Do not use stainless steel thermos to store acidic drinks such as fruit juice or tea.

According to Associate Professor Thinh, stainless steel is currently widely used in daily life, from stairs, door handles, to some types used to make eating and drinking utensils such as bowls, chopsticks, spoons, etc. Stainless steel has very good insulation properties, so it is used in the technology of producing thermos bottles.

Associate Professor Thinh said that stainless steel is a compound consisting of many components. The quality of each product depends on the type of stainless steel chosen by the manufacturer to produce the product. However, if any stainless steel product contains many metals such as chromium, manganese and nickel, it will have a negative impact on the health of the user.

“The stainless steel used to produce food-related items such as thermos bottles, chopsticks, spoons, bowls, etc. must be made of high-quality stainless steel that does not rust and does not react chemically with the substances it contains,” said Professor Thinh. Therefore, consumers should choose and buy products that have passed legal quality inspection to ensure safety.

Do not use stainless steel bottles, jars, or plastic containers to store fruit juice.

Talking to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Nam - Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Hanoi University of Pharmacy) about the issue, Prof. Nam said that people should not use stainless steel bottles or stainless steel thermoses to store acidic drinks such as fruit juice and tea. Because these drinks will stimulate the release of heavy metals in stainless steel, leading to chemical reactions that create carcinogens.

Using plastic bottles to soak apricot and star fruit juice will cause the acid in these fruits to react with the plasticizer, creating toxic substances that can cause cancer.

Professor Hai Nam recommends that consumers should carefully review the instructions for use of thermos bottles before purchasing. If these products have clear origins, are imported and traded legally, their quality will be guaranteed.

Professor Nam noted that housewives should absolutely not use stainless steel or large plastic jars to soak fruit juices year after year, such as apricot juice, strawberry juice, hawthorn juice, etc. Because fruits with a lot of acid will react with stainless steel compounds and plasticizers, creating toxic substances. These toxins can cause cancer in users.

“Office ladies also often store sour soup or pickled water spinach in stainless steel thermoses or stainless steel lunch boxes and should not bring them to work,” said Professor Nam.
