Deputy Minister of Health will directly perform the first surrogacy surgery

Tomorrow (January 22), the Central Maternity Hospital will perform a cesarean section and welcome the first baby born after "surrogacy".

That is the information announced by Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ba Quyet, Director of the Central Maternity Hospital this afternoon (January 21). According to Associate Professor Quyet, the first baby born through this surrogacy method will be delivered by cesarean section by Deputy Minister of Health, who is also Director of the National Center for Reproductive Support Nguyen Viet Tien.

According to information from the Central Obstetrics Hospital, the surrogate mother is a mother from Ha Nam province, 36 weeks pregnant. The mother has been admitted to the hospital for a health check and necessary tests before surgery.

Thus, after more than 1 year since the Decree allowing surrogacy took effect (January 1, 2015), up to now, the Central Obstetrics Hospital has had 70 qualified applications, of which more than 50 cases have become pregnant, Tu Du Hospital has 19 cases out of a total of 33 approved applications.

According to Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Tien, most of the surrogacy cases performed at the National Center for Reproductive Support have uterine cancer, no uterus or frequent miscarriages.

To carry out surrogacy, couples and the surrogate mother must complete a set of documents including many papers and certificates to ensure legal procedures. The surrogate mother must be confirmed to be related to the person requesting the pregnancy.

Then the hospital's professional council and scientific and technical council will examine to determine whether the infertile couple is properly indicated for this technique or not for consultation.

Currently, there are 3 hospitals nationwide that are allowed to perform this technique: Central Maternity Hospital, Hue Central General Hospital and Tu Du Hospital.
