If you haven't visited the Merlion statue, you haven't truly "checked in" at Singapore. The Merlion statue – a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish – is the most iconic image of Singapore.

The original statue, measuring 8.6 meters tall and weighing 70 tons, is located in the 2,500 square meter Merlion Park, right on Marina Bay. The lion's head symbolizes the creature that Prince Sang Nila Utama saw when he discovered the land of Singapura.(meaning "lion city" in Sanskrit)In the 11th century BC, it was recorded in the "Malay Annals". The fish tail symbolizes the ancient city of Temasek (meaning "sea" in Javanese) - the name of Singapore before it was renamed "Singapura".

The Merlion statue symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a former fishing village. Today, Merlion Park is a public space, open to the public free of charge.

Lee Kuan Yew, then Prime Minister of Singapore, presided over the Merlion statue unveiling ceremony in 1972. A bronze plaque was erected to commemorate this auspicious event with the inscription: "The Merlion statue is installed here as a symbol welcoming all visitors to Singapore."

The statue was relocated to its current position in 2002, approximately 120 meters from its original location, directly opposite the Fullerton Hotel and overlooking Marina Bay.
