According to the Hurriyet newspaper, the subject was arrested along with 13 others at a restaurant in the city of Izmir on the Aegean coast. On November 24, 2015, the Russian Su-24 was shot down by an air-to-air missile launched from a Turkish F-16.
Ankara's justification for the downing was that the Russian plane had violated Turkish airspace. However, the Russian General Staff and the Syrian Air Defense Command asserted that the Su-24 did not fly over Turkish airspace and was shot down in Syrian airspace.
The downing of the Su-24 aircraft has escalated tensions between Russia and Türkiye, and Moscow has since imposed many economic sanctions on Ankara in retaliation./.
