Thai Navy holds press conference on arrest of 47 Vietnamese fishermen

On April 3, the Thai Navy held a press conference about the arrest of 47 Vietnamese fishermen accused of operating illegally in Thai waters.

At a press conference, Vice Admiral Rungsarit Sattayanukul, Commander of the Thai Navy Region I, said that five Vietnamese fishing boats were captured on the morning of April 2 while operating in Thailand's exclusive economic zone near Chon Buri province, about 180 km from Bangkok, and were catching many types of seafood that are prohibited under Thai law.

The press conference was held at Sattahip naval port, Chon Buri province, after five Vietnamese fishing boats and 47 fishermen were escorted here on the same day.

These people are currently being detained at the Navy Command Region I and will be transferred to the police for prosecution according to the law.

Present at the press conference, the representative of the Vietnamese Embassy requested the Thai side to treat the arrested fishermen humanely. The Embassy's citizen protection officer also requested the Thai side to ensure that the arrested Vietnamese fishermen are treated in accordance with international practices and laws as well as Thai law.
