On May 7, in a town in northern India, hundreds of cows “paraded” down a small slope in a cow beauty contest. The contest was launched by the state government to promote the development of the domestic livestock industry and raise awareness of animal health.

As farmers bring their cows, judges evaluate the contestants based on their size, overall appearance, and the length of their horns. For female cows, an additional step is taken to check their milk production.

The most beautiful and healthy bulls and cows were selected from more than 630 entries. From there, judges evaluated and awarded prizes to 18 winners in different categories.

On the red carpet ramp for the competition, the special “contestants” were free to express their personalities. Some looked very natural with their strutting gait, while many others were just busy fiddling with their hooves, making their owners struggle to pull them along and encourage them to confidently perform in front of the judges.

The winning bulls, representing three different breeds, took home the prize and the winner's scarf.

“I entered the best cow and it won,” said Randhir Singh, a farmer in Dwarka village, pointing to the red ribbon tied around the head of his well-groomed cow, which won first prize in one category. “It makes me feel proud.”

Prem Singh, Haryana's livestock officer, said only indigenous breeds of cows would be allowed to participate in the beauty contest as the state government is trying to popularize local breeds through the contest.

Farmers from all 21 districts of Haryana participated in the unique cow beauty contest.

In recent years, India has emerged as one of the world’s largest milk-producing countries, although its cow milk production is lower than that of Europe or America. Therefore, the government is trying to improve the milk productivity of the domestic cow herd by providing better veterinary support and advice to farmers.
