Farmers rent land to grow watermelons and earn hundreds of millions of dong
(Baonghean.vn) - Having no land for production, 100 households in Nghia Son commune, Nghia Dan district have rented land in Thanh Hoa to grow watermelon and have confirmed the effectiveness, with a yield of 30 tons/ha.

In 2010, after handing over land to local projects, people in Nghia Son commune, Nghia Dan district boldly went to some localities in Thanh Hoa province to rent land to grow watermelon. To date, there are over 100 households growing watermelon with a total area of 125 hectares.

According to the melon growers here, currently, people are using 3 types of melon varieties: Phu Dong, 299 and alluvial variety for planting. In hilly, dry conditions, people have used machines to pump water from streams, lakes and dams 300 - 500 m away. In addition, to increase crop productivity, people have applied the technique of planting melons with plastic tarps.

Planting melons on plastic sheets will create a lot of light, help the plants photosynthesize easily, stimulate strong plant growth, limit harmful insects such as thrips, green worms, earthworms and avoid evaporation of water and fertilizer, avoid soil erosion, and fertilizer runoff during the rainy season. After 3 months of planting, melon yield reaches 28 - 30 tons/ha.
With a field price of about 5,000 VND/kg, each hectare of watermelon yields an average income of 150 million VND. Each household renting land earns hundreds of millions of VND/year.
Currently, the melons grown by the people are purchased by traders in the fields and sold to the northern provinces such as Hai Duong, Hanoi, Thai Nguyen...
