Install underground traffic lights for phone addicts

A city in Germany has installed traffic lights on the road to catch pedestrians glued to their phones.

The city of Augsburg in southern Germany is the first in the world to install traffic lights on the road surface. This is a solution the city government has come up with to deal with phone addicts who often look at their electronic screens while walking and are unaware of the dangers ahead.

In March, a 15-year-old girl died after being hit by a tram. She was wearing headphones, playing on her phone, and crossing the street without looking at the lights.

City authorities hope to prevent unfortunate accidents.

The city government has installed the special traffic lights along two intersections with the highest traffic volume of university students and public transport users. The effectiveness of this project will be monitored regularly before the government decides whether to install the lights throughout the city.

The city’s statement makes it clear that texting a friend or picking a song to listen to while driving to school or work is fine, but simply staring at your phone can lead to dangerous traffic situations. The new LED lights are clearly visible to pedestrians even from a distance.

Separate lane for phone users in China.

"We realized that the normal traffic lights were no longer in the view of pedestrians," said Tobias Harms, an employee of Stadtwerke Augsburg. "So we decided to install new lights. The more lights we have, the more people will see them."

The phenomenon of pedestrians staring at their phones is becoming increasingly worrying. Separate lanes for pedestrians using their phones have been established in Chongqing, China, Antwerp, Belgium, and Kasetsart University, Thailand. The Australian state of Victoria has decided to fine pedestrians $76 if they cross the road illegally while using their phones./.
