An Australian pharmaceutical company has just created a Zika virus-preventing condom for athletes attending the 2016 Olympics.

The two-layer condom called VivaGel is produced by pharmaceutical company Starpharma in collaboration with the world's second largest condom company, Ansell, Medical Daily reported. This product will effectively protect athletes from the risk of being attacked by Zika or other viruses such as HIV, HSV and HPV.

"With the increasing prevalence of sexually transmitted Zika virus, VivaGel will be very useful," said Starpharma director Jackie Fairley.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said Starphama condoms would be shipped directly to the Olympic Village in quantities of 350,000 for men and 100,000 for women. The AOC also rejected the idea of mandatory blood tests for athletes returning from Rio de Janeiro, saying those who took full precautions were unlikely to be infected.
