America uses Central Europe to surround Russia?

(Baonghean.vn) - US and NATO officials confirmed that the missile shield in Europe, including the Aegis Ashore base in Romania, is not aimed at Russia. Meanwhile, Sputnik channel quoted the head of the European Geopolitical Analysis Center, Mateusz Piskorski, saying that the above program is part of Washington's strategy to counter Moscow.

According to him, the US is currently using its missile defense initiative in Europe to “pursue geopolitical goals”.

“The Central European countries are just tools to help (Washington) isolate Russia from the West. Of course, they are also using other countries along Russia’s borders to limit Russia’s regional integration initiatives,” Mr. Piskorski explained.

Piskorski also noted that Washington’s move violates international laws and treaties, including those signed in the 1970s and NATO commitments from the 1990s. He added that these documents are “openly violated by the US.”

“It is clear that for the US, international law is just a tool. If it is convenient for them, they will use international law and sign treaties. In fact, they declare that international law is not as important as their national and geostrategic interests,” the analyst asserted.

A US missile defense system went into operation on May 12 at a former Soviet military base in Romania. The $800 million system is part of a larger effort to protect Europe from the threat of Iranian ballistic missiles.

Critics argue that Iran poses no threat to Europe (especially since the nuclear deal has been signed), so a missile defense shield is unnecessary.

Many remain skeptical about the true purpose of the system. “They say it’s a defense program, but we know it’s a military show to show who’s in charge of the Central European countries,” Piskorski said.

The inauguration of Aegis Ashore comes at a time when NATO-Russia tensions are at their lowest point since the Cold War. Mr. Piskorski blames Washington for the trend: “It is the United States that has initiated a new Cold War-style military buildup and military intimidation in a region that was once very stable.”
