The BBC reported today that the incident was discovered by the news agency during an investigation into food safety at many branches of famous fast food brands and coffee shops.
"We found very high concentrations of this bacteria in the ice cubes. The presence of fecal coliform bacteria suggests that the water used to make the ice may have been contaminated, or the ice itself. Therefore, if this ice is consumed, there is a risk of disease," said Dr. Margarita Gomez Escalada, who tested the ice samples at Leeds Beckett University.
Contaminated ice samples were found at five restaurants and cafes, including the KFC outlet at Martineau Place shopping centre in Brimingham.BBC reported that a few weeks ago, this KFC store had temporarily closed to disinfect the store.
A KFC representative said they were "extremely disappointed" with the results of the ice sample test, emphasizing that they "immediately launched an investigation" and "retrained all employees on hygiene procedures."
