Thanh Van farmers harvest onions on fishing nets. |
Thanh Van currently has 14 hectares of shallots. Because when harvesting, the onions often break and it is easy to find and pick up the bulbs, leaving them in the soil, Thanh Van farmers have come up with an idea, which is to grow shallots on fishing nets.
The villagers said: After finishing the ground, adding fertilizer, spread a layer of 3mm nylon net on top, then spread a very thin layer of soil and spread the seed tubers, then cover with rice husks, sawdust and cassava residue and then cover with a layer of bamboo shoots or straw on top. The next process does not require any additional investment. When harvesting, just hold the edge of the net to gather the onions and select the tubers. The nylon net, sawdust and rice husks will be collected and preserved for planting in the following crops.

This is a simple scientific and technological advance but has many advantages. First of all, it saves the effort of cultivation, next it saves land, next it limits weeds and finally it is very easy to harvest.
In addition to the advantages of being easy to grow and harvest, chives are also a crop that is not affected by any insect species, and has a short growth period, so it has high economic value. According to preliminary calculations, one sao of chives can reach 500-700 kg, with the current market price of 25,000-30,000 VND, one sao of chives can bring in an income of more than 10 million VND, many times higher than growing rice. With 14 hectares of chives in this crop, Thanh Van commune earned several billion VND.

Mr. Le Van An and Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai in Hamlet 2, Thanh Van Commune have 2 sao of shallots grown using the above method, earning nearly 20 million VND per crop. |
Thanh Van is a purely agricultural commune, located on an ancient alluvial land with fertile soil but the land is limited and the population is large, so the need to increase economic value is always of concern. For many years, Thanh Van has always been at the forefront of producing 3 crops a year, including growing shallots.
Shallots are suitable for the soil here and have favorable output and little damage, so farmers stick with this crop.
With this result, Thanh Chuong district and Thanh Van commune have been organizing tours and seminars for people in the commune and other communes, hoping to widely replicate the model.
