On the afternoon of April 26, during a visit to Co.opXtra supermarket and working session in Ho Chi Minh City, Minister Vilsak expressed his belief in a bright scenario for Vietnam-US trade, especially in the agricultural sector, in the coming time.

Mr. Vilsak predicted that the opportunity to strengthen agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and the US promises to be huge. American consumers favor many types of Vietnamese vegetables and fruits. Some Vietnamese fruit trees have been introduced to the US market and vice versa. He also shared the latest information that the two countries are discussing allowing some specialty fruits: mango, star apple from Vietnam to enter the US market. "We will continue to find out what other agricultural products from Vietnam are favored by American consumers," he said.

The head of the US Department of Agriculture said that TPP creates a large market for participating countries. Research results predict that Vietnam's GDP could increase by 10% in the next decade. This trade agreement promises to create many job opportunities, thereby increasing people's income. Accessing this playground, Vietnam's agriculture has the opportunity to develop the supply chain, thereby boosting exports. Specialization in each field such as agricultural production, packaging, transportation... leads to creating many job opportunities for people.

The US Secretary of Agriculture said that Vietnamese farmers should not worry about their products not being able to compete with goods from other countries after joining the TPP because this trade agreement will help increase Vietnam's GDP. Economic development leads to more diverse consumer demand. Farmers will have more customers, new markets and increased production output.

Answering the previous question that American businesses entered Vietnam mainly to sell goods and not to really invest, the Minister explained that they had to sell goods first, and when the market was big enough, the need for investment would naturally come later.

It is important to understand that Vietnam exports to the US and the US also exports to Vietnam, so the opportunities are equal. When tariff barriers are reduced and removed according to the roadmap, Vietnamese goods will have many opportunities to access larger markets. In the coming time, the US will also provide technical support to help Vietnam overcome current barriers.
