(Baonghean.vn) - The Lam River - Nguoc Mountain, located in the communes of Ngoc Son and Thanh Ngoc (Thanh Chuong district), is a well-known landmark. Not only famous for its beautiful river and mountain landscape, it is also a significant historical site, remembered for the folk saying "hundreds of bombs couldn't faze the mountain" during the resistance against the American invasion.

Legend has it that Ru Nguoc was once the base of Princess Ngoc, daughter of King Ngo Quyen, during the chaos of the Twelve Warlords in the late 10th century. From the mid-16th to the end of the 17th century, it was the site of many bloody battles between feudal factions... Ru Nguoc is also considered the birthplace of the famous Nguyen Canh family, known for many renowned generals and loyal officials.

During the destructive wars waged by the American imperialists, Ru Nguoc was a "single-lane pass" on the vital Highway 15 connecting Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces through Tan Ky and Do Luong to Can Loc, Khe Giao, and Quang Binh. Like other key targets such as Truong Bon and Cau Gang, the enemy dropped a large amount of bombs and ammunition on this area.

So much so that folk tales about the ferocity, the will, and the courage of the soldiers and people of the heroic Ru Nguoc still resonate today: "The foot of Ru Nguoc was bombed as thickly as scattered chaff," but "hundreds of bombs did not faze the mountain," with the determination to "fill Rao Gang and level Ru Nguoc mountain," "we will not hesitate to leave our homes until the vehicles have passed"...

During those years of fierce fighting, along with organizing counter-aircraft strikes and mine clearance operations, Thanh Chuong district decided to build a 5km-long bypass road behind Nguoc Mountain to ensure a constant supply of vehicles to the front lines. Nguoc Mountain became a battleground of bombs and bullets and the unwavering will to win, contributing to the glorious tradition of this revolutionary homeland.

Ru Nguoc and surrounding areas such as Ngoc Son commune, Thanh Ngoc commune, and Thanh Chuong town are progressing in the process of modernization, becoming attractive destinations for industrial and tourism investment. The treacherous road has also been and is being expanded to reduce hazards. The Lam River and Nui Nguoc mountain have been, are, and will forever be symbols of the resilience, indomitability, loyalty, and righteousness of Thanh Chuong district.
