Electronic cigarettes can be manufactured in shapes resembling regular cigarettes, pipes, or cigars, or even everyday items like ballpoint pens or USB drives. Currently, there are over 250 brands of electronic cigarettes on the market.
Despite being advertised as safer than regular cigarettes, the harmful effects of e-cigarettes are still not widely known.
How do e-cigarettes work?
Most e-cigarette devices consist of three main parts:
- A compartment containing tobacco e-liquid, which includes nicotine along with flavorings and other chemicals;
- A heating element;
- Power source (usually a battery).
In many devices, simply blowing into the device activates the heating element to burn the e-liquid in the reservoir. This process creates an airflow for the smoker to inhale.
Are e-cigarettes safer than regular cigarettes?
This is a very difficult question to answer because we don't have enough information about the new devices appearing on the market.
Smoking inevitably leads to many diseases, and death is almost unavoidable. In the US, more than 400,000 people die each year from tobacco-related illnesses. Smokers often develop cancer or heart disease due to inhaling tar and other chemicals. Tobacco is addictive primarily because of nicotine.
E-cigarettes are designed to mimic traditional smoking by producing a vapor that smells like regular cigarettes and contains nicotine, but with fewer harmful chemicals from tobacco fibers. Therefore, compared to regular cigarettes, e-cigarette use is less harmful.
