South Korea: "Descendants of the Sun" grosses over $880 million
According to the Overseas Economic Research Institute (Korea), the recent hit movie "Descendants of the Sun" brought in nearly 900 million USD in profit for this country.

The Overseas Economic Research Institute of the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) released a report analyzing the export performance and the influence of the Korean cultural wave Hallyu brought about by the KBS drama "Descendants of the Sun."
The institute analyzed the direct and indirect effects of the drama, which brought in over 1 trillion won (over $880 million) in profits.
The copyright of this film in China is 4 million USD, Japan is 1.6 million USD. In addition, the film is expected to be exported to a total of 32 countries, including Asian countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Vietnam or Western countries such as England, America, France, Italy.
The total direct export value is estimated to reach 10 billion won (8.8 million USD). The total direct and indirect export effect of the film through production promotion and added value as well as advertising effect is estimated to exceed 1,000 billion won (over 880 million USD).
Based on the influence of past dramas "Dae Jang-geum" and "Boys from the Stars," the institute calculated that "Descendants of the Sun" will contribute to attracting about 100,000 foreign tourists to Korea.
According to the Korea National Tourism Organization, each foreign visitor to Korea spends an average of about $1,102 per day based on 2014 standards.
"Descendants of the Sun" is a KBS drama that airs every Wednesday and Thursday, premiering on February 24 and ending on April 14 with a peak viewership rating of 38.8%.
