It is believed that the offender wanted to end his life by being torn apart by wild animals. Zoo Director Alekhandra Montalva explained that in accordance with security requirements, in case of a threat to human life, it is necessary to take the life of the animal.
"The suicidal person entered the lion cage, tore off his clothes and started teasing our animals," AFO quoted the Zoo Director as saying.
The zoo staff were then forced to kill the pair of lions, one male and one female, who had been brought here from Africa and had lived at the zoo for the past 20 years. According to the director, in the time of urgent need to stop the attack of wild animals, tranquilizers alone were not enough in such a critical situation.
The young man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The incident happened on a weekend when the Zoo was very busy.
