Mrs. Nguyen Thi Lien's family planted 5 sao of watermelons and after 3 months of care, they recently harvested nearly 10 tons of melons. Selling at 5,500 VND/kg, they earned more than 50 million VND. "Compared to last year, this melon crop is more fruitful and also has a higher price. Last season, we only sold melons for 3,000 VND/kg. With that area, each sao after deducting expenses makes a profit of about 8 million VND.

According to calculations, 1 hectare of melon yields about 20 tons, worth about 110 million VND.

People are excited when melons have good prices.

The area of watermelon cultivation in Tan Phu commune is 55 hectares. Mr. Dang Ngoc Thuan, an agricultural officer of Tan Phu commune, said: “Watermelon is a crop that brings high economic value, but the value depends on each year. Like last year, the trees bore fruit but the price was low, this year the opposite is true, the price is high so farmers make a profit. The growing time is short, so people are actively expanding the area of watermelon.”

This year’s melon output of the commune was purchased by traders from Thanh Hoa, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, etc. Thus, on average, each sao of land will yield from 1.2 tons to 1.5 tons of fruit, earning an income of 6 million to 7.5 million VND.

*Some notes when growing melons:

+ Do not use growth stimulants because they stimulate the plant to absorb water strongly, the fruit grows quickly and accumulates a lot of water, making it susceptible to waterlogging, rotting, and broken fruit.

+ Fertilize in a balanced and adequate manner. If you over-fertilize, when the fruit is large and it rains, it will easily spoil.

+ Do not let the soil dry out too much when watering again or when it rains the tree trunk will easily crack.

+ When the fruit is small, do not water it, because it will make the fruit rough.

+ Stop watering 5 - 7 days before harvest to ensure the quality of the melon is sweeter.

+ Stop spraying pesticides 10 - 15 days before harvest to ensure safety for users.
