Nghe An: Farmers 'race' with the summer-autumn crop

(Baonghean.vn) - In the fields of Nhan Thanh and Vinh Thanh communes in Yen Thanh district, since May 20, farmers have gone to the fields to harvest spring rice.

Mr. Tran Van Tiep, Phu Dien hamlet, Nhan Thanh commune shared: His family has 4 members, working on 1 acre of rice field. This spring, his family planted rice varieties: Thai Xuyen, Tam Thom, Bac Thom... with a yield of about 3 quintals/acre. Currently, his family is sowing summer-autumn rice; it is expected that after 10 days of sowing, they will plant early to avoid flooding.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, a farmer in Trung Hau hamlet, said that her family has 8 sao of rice fields, which started harvesting on May 20. According to Ms. Hai, this spring rice crop has a high yield, expected to be no less than 4 quintals/sao, with low costs and few pests.

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thanh district, the spring rice crop of this year is estimated to reach 73 quintals/ha (the spring crop of 2015 reached 71 quintals/ha). It is expected that by June 5, Yen Thanh district will finish harvesting the spring rice crop. Because the harvest is later than the spring crop of previous years, the district People's Committee has directed localities to prepare the land for summer-autumn planting as soon as they harvest, especially in low-lying and flooded fields.

In Dien Chau, people started planting on May 15 and are currently focusing on completing 300 hectares of seedlings, ensuring the planting of 8,700 hectares of summer-autumn rice.

To ensure summer-autumn production on schedule, Dien Chau district has directed local authorities and cooperatives to recommend farmers to use medium and short-term varieties (under 110 days) such as: Thien Uu 8, SV 181, Viet Lai, NA 2, NA 9, Bac Thom and high-yield glutinous rice varieties...

Dien Chau applies care measures for healthy seedlings to grow quickly in time for planting from June 10 to 20, while also mobilizing farmers to produce single-variety fields in the summer-autumn crop and implement SRI farming methods to save water and fight drought.

Summer-autumn crop - this year, the whole province plans to plant 94,000 hectares of rice, including 52,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice and 42,000 hectares of winter-spring rice. Thus, the summer-autumn rice area decreased by 5,000 hectares in areas that do not have water throughout the crop.

In the forecasted weather conditions of early drought and late-season floods, localities must concentrate on checking lakes and dams, taking advantage of the dry season to handle damage, dredge canals, especially drainage canals to both fight drought and flood.
